Why I Created SorryForYourLoss.uk
A personal story about loss, remembrance, and the promise that became this website.
A few years ago, someone very close to me passed away.
Like so many families, we laid them to rest, said our goodbyes and tried to carry on with life. But one day I returned to the cemetery because I simply needed to spend a few quiet moments with them.
The problem was… I couldn’t find their grave.
It may not sound like a big thing to some people, but at that moment I was struggling myself. Life wasn’t easy, and I desperately needed somewhere to sit, reflect, and feel close to the person I’d lost. Instead, I found myself walking around the cemetery searching row after row, feeling increasingly frustrated and upset.
Eventually I left without finding them.
That experience stayed with me.
More recently my older brother passed away, and I made myself a promise: I would never allow this to happen again—not for me, and hopefully not for anyone else.
That promise became SorryForYourLoss.uk
I wanted to create more than just a mere memorial website. I wanted to build a place where every loved one could have a permanent online memorial that tells their story, celebrates their life, and can be shared with family and friends for generations to come, wherever they may be in the world.
Every memorial page can include photographs, personal tributes, life stories, name of the funeral director and—perhaps most importantly—the exact location of a grave or resting place using GPS coordinates or What3Words. No more wandering through a cemetery trying to remember where someone is buried. No more worrying that future generations won’t know where to visit.
But remembrance is about more than a location.
It’s about preserving memories before they’re forgotten. It’s about giving family and friends somewhere to leave messages of condolences, share stories, and celebrate a life that mattered. This is especially important for those who were unable to attend the funeral, because they found out too late or maybe because they live abroad.
Losing someone you love is one of life’s hardest experiences. While I can’t take away that pain, I hope this website can make one small part of the journey a little easier.
Whether you’ve recently lost someone or you’re looking to preserve the memory of a loved one for future generations, it’s never too early—or too late—to create a lasting tribute.
Because every life deserves to be remembered.
And no one should ever have to aimlessly search a cemetery for the person they came to find.
We try to make the whole process as easy and natural as possible by guiding you with thoughtful prompts, such as “What was your relationship with them?” or “How did you first meet?”
These questions not only help you tell their story when you may not know where to begin, but also give every memorial a consistent structure and appearance, making each tribute easy to read and navigate.
Most importantly, there is no pressure to complete a memorial in one sitting. Take your time. You can save your progress, return whenever you wish, and log back in to add to or update the memorial whenever you have more memories, photographs or stories you’d like to share.
After all, remembering someone isn’t something that needs to be rushed.
